Translation by Elena LAZAR, Cristina NAESCU and Tudor DINU
Foreword by Acad. Răzvan THEODORESCU
ISBN 978-973-8319-79-0

The author of this book is His Excellency Georgios D. Poukamisas, the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to Romania. The second volume published in Romanian (the first, A Dialogue with History, was published in 2009) comprises the essays of the first edition as well as writings on various subjects, from travel notes to history (Kapodistrias and Metternich. Two Opposing Views on the Eastern Question). The author stresses the significant moments in his country’s history, from ancient time to the present, viewed in a broader Balkanic, Mediterranean or European context. The Romanian-Hellenic relations, the presence of the Greeks in Romania are also among the subjects approached. According to him „These texts are the result of my meditations on my country, Greece, while others sprang from my love of Romania, of the land and the people which Greeks know well.” In the foreword to the Romanian edition Academician Răzvan Theodorescu writes: „Ambassador Giorgios Poukamisas, by his writings and opinions, does credit to Greece, a country of ancient and great culture.” The author dedicated the book „to the country my forefathers knew since the Bronze Age, at the time of the Argonauts who sailed on the Danube, to my Romanian friends and to all the Greek researchers and creators who continue and will continue for ever to be attracted by this land.”
A graduate of the Law Faculty of the University of Athens (1977) and of the Diplomatic Accademy in Vienna (1979), Giorgios D. Poukamisas has been in the diplomatic service for over twenty-five years. The books published by the Greek Ambassador in Bucharest are a most interesting exploration in European history, from ancient time to the present-day society which is troubled by the issues of globalization.
