Stephan Eleutheriadis (b. 1922), a graduate of the Bucharest Faculty of Architecture (1948), was attrracted to painting from an early age. Forced by the communist regime to leave Romania in 1950, he lived in Greece for a short period of time, and then he settled in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro. His achievements, in both architecture and painting, received prestigious awards in Brazil and in other countries.
Mangalia. In Memoriam, subtitled Visual Elegies, is an album comprising sixty-three drawings of the Romanian-born Greek painter of Brazil. Beyond their intrinsic artistic value, the drawings represent a priceless historical document, as they preserve the image of buildings (among which the Sf. Nicolae Greek Church, „a humble building, but so much faith!”, as writes the author) that have long disappeared because of historical vicissitudes or people’s indiference.
